Job Description The Role General Motors is seeking motivated, analytical students to join our Supplier Quality Internship Program for Summer 2027. This 12-week, project-based internship offers hands-on experience in supplier quality, manufacturing processes, and automotive engineering.
Interns may be assigned to one of two focus areas: Supplier Quality Engineer or Supplier Quality Launch Engineer. In either area, you will work with experienced General Motors team members and suppliers to support quality performance, resolve manufacturing issues, and contribute to projects that help deliver reliable, high-quality components to customers.This internship provides the opportunity to collaborate with purchasing, product engineering, manufacturing, and supplier teams while learning how quality is managed throughout the component and vehicle development lifecycle. The Team The Supplier Quality team serves as the technical connection between General Motors and its suppliers. The team helps suppliers establish effective quality systems, prepare components for production, resolve manufacturing and quality issues, and maintain strong performance throughout the life of a component.Supplier Quality team members work across functions and with supplier partners to support new vehicle launches, improve production processes, and protect the customer experience. Interns will learn from industry professionals in a fast-paced, collaborative automotive environment. What You’ll Do
Be the technical liaison between GM purchasing, product engineering, manufacturing, and our supply base. You will also work with the suppliers to resolve supplier manufacturing and quality issues, implement and monitor advanced quality planning systems, and provide technical support throughout the lifecycle of a particular commodity, including warranty. Role responsibilities include:
Support supplier understanding and use of Advanced Product Quality Planning processes and Production Part Approval Process requirements in accordance with General Motors standards.
Review supplier quality plans, including control plans and Process Failure Mode and Effects Analyses, for new components and assemblies.
Review supplier manufacturing processes and quality systems.
Support root-cause analysis and corrective actions for supplier manufacturing and quality issues.
Participate in supplier visits to support root-cause analysis and verify corrective actions.
Help implement and monitor supplier part qualification and certification activities, including Production Part Approval Process submissions and production-rate evaluations.
Support efforts to improve supplier quality performance through workshops, technical assistance, and quality-system development.
Collaborate with purchasing, product engineering, manufacturing, and supplier teams to address quality concerns and support project milestones.
Use analytical and problem-solving skills to identify trends, evaluate issues, and recommend practical solutions.
Contribute to continuous improvement and general engineering projects that create value for General Motors and its supplier.
Implement and monitor supplier part qualification and certification processes (PPAP, Run at Rate).
Improve quality performance of suppliers by conducting onsite workshops at supplier locations, providing technical assistance in developing a robust quality system, or other technical support as required.
Required Qualifications
Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, industrial and systems engineering, manufacturing engineering, materials or metallurgical engineering, quality engineering or management, or a related technical discipline.
Available to work full-time, 40 hours per week, during the 12-week summer internship.
Must be graduating between December 2027 - June 2029.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Basic knowledge of quality systems, manufacturing processes, or engineering fundamentals.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
Willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Completion of your sophomore or junior year of college before the start of the internship.
Exposure to lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, or quality engineering tools.
Familiarity with engineering drawings, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, or materials science concepts.
Prior internship, co-op, academic project, or other hands-on experience in manufacturing or the automotive industry.
Demonstrated initiative, accountability, and ownership of assigned work.
Ability to build effective relationships with diverse teams across functions and cultures.
Customer-focused approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement.
High level of integrity and professionalism.
Start Date
Start dates for this internship role are May 24th & June 14th of 2027.
Work Arrangement Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren, MI three times per week, at minimum.
