The Role
Designs and delivers programs to train all levels of personnel. Develops tests and visual aids, conducts training classes, and develops criteria for evaluating effectiveness of training activities. Keeps abreast of training and development research: learning theory, motivation theory, and new materials, methods, and techniques. Develops in-house programs and practices to identify developmental needs, including preparing personnel for more responsible positions and increasing effectiveness in present assignments. May evaluate and/or oversee contractors or vendors to develop and/or administer training programs. May be responsible for development of e-learning programs.
Responsibilities of the Apprentice Academic Instructor include the following:
Prepare for instruction for one or more different courses, assist with updating lesson plans and syllabi, handouts, visual aids, etc.
Conduct classes and present instructional material using appropriate instructional strategies, including lecturing, demonstrating, and discussing applicable information. Enforce Apprentice School and company policies.
Evaluate apprentice progress through preparation, administration, and grading of assignments and tests.
Where appropriate, they provide individual assistance, instruction, and retesting opportunities outside normal working hours to apprentices who seek additional assistance and may have received failing grades on course objectives.
Remain current with the latest developments in the teaching areas, including content, instructional methodology, and applications to shipbuilding.
Support other areas of the school (e.g., pre-apprenticeship instruction, Admissions interviewing, etc.).
Maintain appropriate levels of communication and interaction with apprentice craft instructors and lead apprentice craft instructors in the Craft Training areas to maintain and improve the relevance of related academic instruction to craft skills development.
Assist the manager, Academics in administrative duties and with special projects. Administrative duties include such activities as records maintenance, class coordination, proposal of class schedules, and development and maintenance of curriculum and course documentation.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 6 years of relevant exempt experience; Master’s Degree and 4 year of relevant professional experience
One of the following may be used as equivalent to Bachelor's Degree to meet minimum qualifications:
NNS Apprentice School graduate
Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate
Associate's Degree or other formal 2 year program and 2 years of relevant exempt experience or 4 years of relevant non-exempt experience
Military Paygrade E-5 or above military experience
High School/GED and 4 years combined of Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience or other relevant exempt experience
High School/GED and 8 years combined of Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience or other relevant non-exempt experience
Nice to Have
To qualify to teach technical core classes, an associate degree from an accredited college/university in the discipline is required and/or scholarly and/or professional achievement must be documented.
To qualify to teach general education classes, at least a bachelor degree from an accredited college/university plus at least 18 graduate credits in the discipline being taught is required.
