To be eligible to apply for a co-op student position, you must meet the following criteria:
Legally entitled to work in Canada as a student.
In possession of a Social Insurance Number (card) at time of hire.
Currently enrolled in a post-secondary educational institution on a full-time basis and returning to school upon completion of the co-op work term(s).
This position will require the successful incumbent to provide proof of co-op eligibility, a transcript and tax credit form(s) from their school’s co-op department.
Job Summary
This position provides operational support at wastewater treatment plants located in Oakville, Burlington, and Acton.
Duties & Responsibilities
Attends Health and Safety training to ensure personal safety compliance with Provincial legislated standards.
Assists with collection of wastewater samples, analytical data analysis and reporting.
Monitors the performance of plant process equipment and related appurtenances, including, but not limited to, valves, gates, pumps, compressors, engines, electric motors/generators, boilers, incinerators, HVAC systems, chemical dosing equipment, etc.
Utilizes various tools to assist with operational duties, including, but not limited to, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), Eramosa Reporting and Information System (e.RIS) to maintain, manage and validate the operational data
Verifies Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system data with field observation results and reports anomalies.
Identifies changes in operational conditions and interprets information in order to implement corrective actions and/or troubleshoot process issues
Adjusts, inspects and evaluates processes and equipment that control the operation and effectiveness of a wastewater treatment facility to optimize performance, maintain regulatory compliance, and minimize local and/or plant-wide adverse impacts while taking into consideration cost, equipment capabilities, environmental impacts and OH&S
Attends facility related operational process control meetings and undertakes any action items assigned.
Assists with minor equipment maintenance.
Assists with the documentation, review and update of standard operating procedures and the development of training manuals for all operational processes.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Skills & Qualifications
Essential
Currently enrolled in a post-secondary education co-op program in Environmental, Chemical Engineering or related field.
Effective written and oral communication skills.
Experience in research.
Self-motivated, demonstrate initiative, and the ability to work successfully in a largely self-directed work environment.
Ability to work collaboratively in an empowered team environment.
Advanced experience with office technology solutions including Microsoft Office.
The incumbent will be exposed to a wide variety of treatment processes, legislative requirements that require attention to detail and documentation.
Experience with laboratory procedures and equipment.
Possession of their Operator in Training (OIT) License.
Preferred
Experience with using hand tools.
Working/ Employment Conditions
The successful incumbents(s) will be assigned to a Regional facility based on order of hire.
The successful incumbent will be required to have a valid G driver's license and may be required to report to different facilities throughout their work term.
The incumbent will be required to supply his own CSA approved (Green Patch) steel-toed, and steel soled work boots and safety glasses (prescription if required). Region of Halton will supply coveralls that are to be returned at conclusion of work term.
Will be required to work both indoors and outdoors in potentially odorous and inclement weather conditions.
Employment Conditions:
The incumbent will be required to drive a Regional vehicle and will be required to provide a copy of their driver’s license and a driver’s abstract, by their first day of employment.
The successful candidate will be made an offer of employment on condition that the Regional Municipality of Halton receives a current (obtained within the past six (6) months), original and acceptable Criminal Records Check, by the first day of employment.
