Job Description

At EDF, Success is Personal. That means your journey is unique to you. Join our Emergency Preparedness Industrial Placement and you’ll gain hands-on experience, develop key skills, and help Britain achieve net zero – all while shaping a career that’s truly yours.

"Electricity is such a vital component in everyone’s lives. It powers schools, businesses and hospitals, so I knew that if I did my placement within EDF then I would have a really large impact on society, and that made my placement a lot more fulfilling.” Priyanka, Science and Engineering Industrial Placement.

The Opportunity

This 12-month placement offers a starting salary of £26,050 and the chance to work on site at either our #Heysham 1 or #Heysham 2 Power Station.

You’ll launch your career in Emergency Preparedness with our customised training programme. You’ll take on a meaningful role, gaining hands-on experience while learning from experts and contributing to the enhancement of the department.

You’ll support the planning and delivery of emergency exercises and training events

Production of communications material to support the administration of the Emergency Scheme

Attend internal and external facing emergency planning forums – including meetings with local authorities and emergency services

Supporting improvement projects relating to emergency facilities and equipment

You will get involved in a broad spectrum of Emergency Preparedness areas, gain experience of team working, problem solving, using human performance tools and take part in Emergency Preparedness and Station related training. You will also have the exciting opportunity to work on plant operations and explore other areas of interest.

What You’ll Experience

During your Emergency Preparedness Industrial Placement, you’ll gain in-depth experience within the department at a nuclear power plant. Past students have worked on safety campaigns, developed analytical methods to optimise performance, and helped to develop Emergency exercise scenarios.

You’ll learn about systems vital to Emergency Preparedness, including safety protocols, technical governance, quality assurance, analysis, communication strategies and IT systems. You’ll also collaborate with other departments to understand how a nuclear power station operates.

Your Work Location

You will be based at either our #Heysham 1 or #Heysham 2 Nuclear Power Station in Lancashire and you will have the opportunity to work cross-functionally with other departments, allowing you to get a comprehensive picture of how a nuclear power station is run.

Who You Are

To be eligible for this scheme, you need to be on track to achieve, or have already achieved, a 2:2 undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Business, Engineering or Science. You should possess strong technical and analytical skills, along with a genuine desire to learn and develop new capabilities. A questioning attitude, good teamwork, and effective communication skills are also essential qualities we seek. You should have an interest in working in a highly regulated, safety-conscious industry with some basic knowledge of nuclear reactor design, operations and safety.

It is a requirement that those who join us have the right to work in the UK. Whilst sponsorship may be a possibility, we reserve the right in our decisions to give priority to those who already have the right to work in the UK.

To be appointed to this role, you will need to meet the criteria for Security Vetting, which will, ordinarily, require you to have been a resident of the UK for at least three of the past five years.

Pay, Benefits and Culture

Alongside a starting salary of at least £26,050 per annum and a market-leading pension scheme, your package will include customisable benefits such as electric vehicle leasing, discounted gym membership, life assurance, tech vouchers, experience days, and more.

At EDF, we believe there are multiple definitions of what it means to succeed. That’s why we offer you the freedom to develop a career that’s unique to you. Here, Success is Personal – it’s your journey, powered by us.

Some of our roles at EDF attract large volumes of applications. When this happens, we’ll apply the Disability Confident scheme’s guidance on taking practical and appropriate steps selecting disabled candidates who best meet the minimum criteria for the job.

Our Recruitment Process

We'll guide you through every stage and keep you updated along the way. You'll be supported by real people, with opportunities to ask questions, learn more and receive feedback where possible.

For our Early Careers Programmes, we use a combination of automated decision-making, assessment technology and human review.
