Role Purpose
Corning Gorilla Development is seeking an engineering intern to contribute to the development of new glass and glass-ceramic products. Working under mentor guidance, the intern will apply materials science and engineering principles to design and execute experiments, analyze data, and build fundamental understanding of glass and glass-ceramic systems. This role will have an emphasis on the relationships between processing parameters and structural characterization. This role provides hands-on project leadership experience within a collaborative, multidisciplinary R&D environment.
Key Responsibilities
Design and lead experimentation for new glass and glass-ceramic product development, applying heat treatment, chemical, thermal, structural, and materials engineering principles
Apply Design of Experiments (DOE) methodology and statistical analysis to assess process capability and drive data-informed development decisions
Compile and communicate professional data reports to team members and leadership both verbally and through written documentation (presentations and end of project report)
Partner with Scientists, Engineers, and Technicians across Research, Development, and Manufacturing to troubleshoot material and process issues and implement corrective actions
Maintain a safe work environment in full compliance with applicable safety and environmental regulations
Experiences/Education - Required
Currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD program in Materials Science and Engineering, Glass Science, or Ceramics Engineering
Knowledge of glass and glass-ceramic properties and material property interactions
Knowledge of experimental characterization techniques related to glass and glass-ceramics
Familiarity with Design of Experiments (DOE) design and execution
Proficiency in data analysis tools such as Excel, Minitab, JMP, or equivalent software
Ability to apply chemical, thermal, and materials engineering principles to product and process development challenges
Experiences/Education - Desired
Prior research or development experience with glass or glass-ceramic materials synthesis
Experience with characterization techniques, specifically structural techniques such as X-Ray Diffraction and Raman Spectroscopy
Prior exposure to process engineering or product development environments
Experience in glass and glass-ceramic modeling techniques
Skills
Communicates technical findings clearly to multidisciplinary audiences through written reports and verbal presentations
Diagnoses root cause of material and process issues and implements corrective actions with mentor guidance
Collaborates across cross-functional teams spanning Research, Development, and Manufacturing to deliver shared project outcomes
