Location: France, Bagneux
Air Liquide Healthcare, the Healthcare branch of the Air Liquide Group, is a world leader in this field. Today, Air Liquide Healthcare is present in hospitals and patients' homes to provide products, services, and support programs for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of chronic diseases or during acute episodes.
The Explor! center is an expertise structure independent of manufacturers, dedicated to the rigorous and objective evaluation of medical devices. Located in Bagneux, Explor! integrates a multidisciplinary team that masters the entire value chain, from identifying an innovation to publishing scientific evidence.
The management of diabetes is currently undergoing a technological revolution with the advent of Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) systems. While subcutaneous sensors are standard, the industry is pivoting toward minimally invasive technologies (e.g., microneedle arrays, dermal patches) that aim to reduce patient discomfort while maintaining clinical accuracy. These technologies utilize microneedle arrays or proprietary biosensing patches to measure glucose levels in the interstitial fluid (ISF) of the dermis, rather than the subcutaneous fat.
Evaluating these devices presents a unique metrological challenge. Testing protocols for subcutaneous sensors are not directly transposable to intradermal technologies due to differences in ISF dynamics, skin impedance, and the mechanical interface at the dermal layer. Consequently, there is a critical need to develop a standardized bench test to evaluate these sensors.
The goal of the internship is to deliver primary test results using minor adaptations of an existing test bench for traditional CGMs, and to determine and begin to implement all adaptations to be performed (methods, materials, tools) in order to assess minimally invasive CGMs in the most reproducible and industrialized way.
Objectives
Proceed to first rough assessment using existing tools: How far can we go in the assessment of minimally invasive CGMs, relying on the existing tools and methodologies already in place in the Explor Center ?
Introduce a structured plan for the development of a dedicated minimally invasive CGMs test bench and/or for the deep adaptation of the existing bench. It is expected that the intern will lead this initiative with a comprehensive approach of technical requirements, current research interests in the scientific community, local lab constraints and budget.
Start to implement the development of the bench. Iterative testing will allow to refine the total plan for development, with the support of a team specialised in bench assessment.
The internship will therefore rely on two main phases
Phase I: Literature Review, familiarisation with existing tools, testing on existing tools (2 Months)
Phase II: Construction of development plan alongside with iterative testing
