Project Description Multiple sclerosis (MS) can affect bladder and bowel function, significantly impacting quality of life. However, these symptoms are not always identified, discussed, or addressed early. Some people with MS may not realise that bladder and bowel symptoms are related to their condition, while others may find them difficult to discuss with healthcare professionals.

This project will explore how bladder and bowel dysfunction is managed within the Danish MS patient pathway. The objective is to understand when and where these symptoms are identified, how they are discussed, and how people with MS are guided to appropriate support and treatment. The project will map the patient pathway across the Danish healthcare system, including relevant hospitals, neurology departments, MS centres, healthcare professionals, and patient organisations. It will examine the routes patients may follow from diagnosis and initial symptoms through assessment, treatment, and ongoing support.

The research may also assess variations in patient pathways and clinical practice across regions and healthcare settings in Denmark. Particular focus will be placed on barriers to communication, assessment, referral, and treatment, as well as opportunities to improve awareness, coordination, and access to care. The findings are expected to provide a structured overview of the current patient pathway and identify opportunities for earlier intervention, clearer guidance, and improved access to relevant support and solutions for people living with MS. The study may use qualitative and quantitative methods, including surveys, desk research, field research, and interviews.

Proficiency in spoken and written Danish is required. The thesis may be in English.
