Position Summary

Since Axiom Space is a very complex work environment, we are looking for a passionate, high-energy Software Engineering Intern who is eager to learn from and be mentored by experienced software engineers. This role supports the design, development, and testing of software across Axiom's spaceflight hardware and ground systems programs. Assignments may include flight or embedded software, ground software tools, or simulation and modeling software, depending on program need. The role requires strong organizational, time management, and communication skills, along with a genuine curiosity for how software is built, tested, and deployed in a mission-critical environment. This is a temporary, project-based internship supporting an active software engineering team.

The internship will be onsite at Axiom Space in Houston, Texas from January 25 to April 16. Interns are responsible for arranging their own transportation and accommodations.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Support the design, development, and testing of software for an assigned project, under the mentorship of experienced software engineers

Write and unit-test code for small, well-defined tasks

Debug issues under guidance from senior engineers

Participate in code reviews to learn best practices and coding standards

Support test automation and CI/CD pipeline activities

Document code and contribute to technical documentation

Depending on assignment, may support embedded/flight software development, ground software tools, or simulation/modeling software

Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to support project objectives

Communicate project progress, status, and potential issues to stakeholders and leadership

Implementing and maintaining agile project management methodologies throughout the project lifecycle

Perform additional job duties as assigned

Education & Experience:

Rising Junior, Senior, or Graduate student (MS/MA or Ph.D.) pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field

Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

Coursework or project experience in one or more programming languages (e.g., C, C++, Python, Java)

Exposure to version control systems (e.g., Git) through coursework or personal projects

Familiarity with basic software testing and debugging practices preferred

Prior internship, co-op, or hands-on project experience (e.g., coding club, hackathons, personal software projects) is a plus

Strong organizational, time management, and communication skills

Genuine curiosity and passion for space exploration and software problem-solving

Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, fast-paced team environment

Self-motivated with the ability to take initiative on assigned tasks

Track record of making things happen in ambiguous, fast-moving environments

Uses good judgement to problem-solve proactively, positively impacting hard challenges

Demonstrated organization skills to meet tight deadlines with high-quality results

Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on the task.

Requirements

This position may require access to export controlled technical data or technology subject to NASA regulations, International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), or Export Administration Regulations (EAR). In accordance with U.S. export control laws, final candidates may be required to undergo additional export control screening to determine eligibility for access. Meeting these requirements is a condition of employment

Must be willing to work evenings and weekends as needed to meet critical project milestones

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of the time)

May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of the time)
