Position Summary

Since Axiom Space is a very complex work environment, we are looking for a passionate, high-energy Systems Engineering Intern who is eager to learn from and be mentored by experienced systems engineers. This role supports systems engineering activities — including requirements definition, interface management, system architecture, and verification and validation planning — across Axiom's spaceflight hardware and ground systems programs. The role requires strong organizational, time management, and communication skills, along with a genuine curiosity for how complex systems fit together. This is a temporary, project-based internship supporting an active systems engineering team.

The internship will be onsite at Axiom Space in Houston, Texas from January 25 to April 16. Interns are responsible for arranging their own transportation and accommodations.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Support systems engineering activities for an assigned subsystem or component, under the mentorship of experienced systems engineers

Assist with requirements definition, documentation, and traceability for an assigned system or subsystem

Support interface control and management activities, helping identify and document interface definitions

Support system architecture development

Assist in verification and validation planning, including supporting test plan development and execution

Support integrated performance assessments and trade studies under guidance

Document systems engineering products (e.g., requirements, test plans, analysis results) to support internal review

Present findings and status updates to the assigned team

Depending on assignment, may support systems engineering activities for EVA/spacesuit systems, station systems, or ground systems

Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to support project objectives

Communicate project progress, status, and potential issues to stakeholders and leadership

Implementing agile development methodologies throughout the project lifecycle

Perform additional job duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience:

Rising Junior, Senior, or Graduate student (MS/MA or Ph.D.) pursuing a degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field

Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

Coursework or project experience related to systems engineering principles (requirements, architecture, verification) is a plus

Exposure to requirements management or MBSE tools (e.g., DOORS, Jama, Cameo) through coursework or personal projects is a plus

Familiarity with basic engineering analysis or modeling tools (e.g., MATLAB) preferred

Prior internship, co-op, or hands-on project experience (e.g., design team, robotics club) is a plus

Strong organizational, time management, and communication skills

Genuine curiosity and passion for space exploration and complex systems problem-solving

Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, fast-paced team environment

Self-motivated with the ability to take initiative on assigned tasks

Track record of making things happen in ambiguous, fast-moving environments

Uses good judgement to problem-solve proactively, positively impacting hard challenges

Demonstrated organization skills to meet tight deadlines with high-quality results

Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on the task.

Requirements

This position may require access to export controlled technical data or technology subject to NASA regulations, International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), or Export Administration Regulations (EAR). In accordance with U.S. export control laws, final candidates may be required to undergo additional export control screening to determine eligibility for access. Meeting these requirements is a condition of employment
