The British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI) is currently seeking a Strategic Asset Allocation (Global Macro) co-op student/intern for the Winter 2027 work term (January to April).

The Global Macro co-op/intern will work within the Strategic Asset Allocation team in the Investment Strategy & Risk department, gaining hands-on experience by applying academic knowledge in a professional setting. The role involves supporting macroeconomic research and the analysis that underpins long-term investment strategy and client advice.
Co-ops/interns conduct research across a broad range of investment topics, including capital markets, investment strategies, performance, and investment products and support the preparation of client reports, presentations and materials for client meetings.
WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH
Investment Strategy & Risk is responsible for setting, implementing and monitoring clients’ long-term investment strategies by working closely with clients, management and asset classes. The department comprises 5 branches: Strategic Asset Allocation, Total Fund Management, Investment Risk and Growth and Investment Solutions.
The Strategic Asset Allocation team consists of three major workstreams. The Global Macro workstream conducts research and models relevant macroeconomic developments, including assessment of the current business cycle dynamics and research of emerging economic or financial trends, opportunities, and risks. The ALM workstream assists clients with developing tailored investment policies that achieve investment objectives consistent with their investment philosophies, funding policies and risk tolerances. The Client Relations workstream’s focus is on building long-term relationships with clients based on trust and to ensure that we exceed our client’s investment performance and service expectations. Successful candidates will gain valuable exposure to all three workstreams while working on the SAA team.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
Conduct macroeconomic and market research on topics such as monetary policy, inflation, and geopolitical risk, and help produce recurring macro data summaries for the team.
Assist with Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions (LTCMAs), including data pulls, returns analysis, peer comparisons, and methodology refinement as needed
Help translate complex macroeconomic analysis into clear, well-styled outputs for senior investment and executive audiences
Support quarterly scenario modelling, narrative development, and maintaining signpost/monitoring frameworks
Build and maintain quantitative analysis and exhibits using Python, Excel, and econometric software, and support dashboard development in Power BI
Ad-hoc projects and tasks assigned by the team
Conduct independent research and prepare reports/presentations on a wide range of investment topics for client meetings and for internal staff
Assist with client education by producing written materials and educational presentations
Actively adheres to compliance and risk management policies and participates in BCI’s business continuity plan
THE IDEAL STUDENT
Working toward a degree in economics, financial mathematics, quantitative finance, or a related quantitative discipline
Demonstrates an ability to gather and process large amounts of data and information and present it in a concise manner
Likes to solve problems using creative and innovative solutions
Enjoy building and maintaining strong relationships with clients and team members.
Demonstrates an extremely strong work ethic and displays initiative to strive to deliver value above and beyond the job description
Has relevant prior co-op experience
Preference will be given to students who have shown initiative and a passion for the investment industry
REQUIRED SKILLS
Solid grasp of macroeconomics, financial markets, and monetary policy; genuine curiosity about global macro and geopolitical developments
Keen interest in investments and a drive to continually learn about financial markets
Strong written and verbal communication skills
High level of professionalism with strong interpersonal skills
Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to meet deadlines while maintaining accuracy and quality
Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills
Interest in finance, economics, and investment management, with a strong work ethic, commitment to ethical standards, and eagerness to learn
Strong time management and project management skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook
Experience with Bloomberg, Python, EViews, and Power BI is an asset

Competitive pay: $2,330.00 gross bi-weekly + vacation leave paid based on 6% of salary
Travel: if coming to Victoria for this work term, BCI will provide a fixed-rate travel allowance based on your location.
