JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Project: Queer Code: LGBTQ+ Technology and Sociocultural Learning
Position Summary The research team seeks an Undergraduate Research Assistant to support Queer Code Studio in the Department of Learning and Performance Systems, working across projects in LGBTQ+ virtual reality, critical AI ethics, and sociocultural learning. The first project involves the design of virtual reality worlds for learning about LGBTQ+ history and culture and is in development. The second project focuses on critical AI and sociotechnical learning with youth and is in the early stages of literature review.
The undergraduate assistant will work with Dr. Dylan Paré and graduate researchers to curate LGBTQ+ digital heritage materials, support interactive and immersive design (development experience is not required), and organize qualitative research data and literature.
Responsibilities The Undergraduate Research Assistant will: ● Investigate key LGBTQ+ historical moments to guide narrative scaffolding. ● Translate historical research into creative design briefs, storyboards, and interactive mechanics for sociocultural learning. ● Source cultural heritage artifacts for immersive learning about LGBTQ+ history. ● Create 3D models for games, if the candidate has these skills, though this is not required. ● Assist with qualitative data organization, file management, and preparation of research materials for analysis. ● Conduct literature searches on LGBTQ+ VR/AI technology and learning, and assist with citation management as needed. ● Participate in research team meetings and contribute to ongoing project documentation.
Minimum Qualifications ● Strong communication skills. ● Interest in research and the research process (literature review, data collection, data organization, etc.). ● Interest in learning design, in particular interactive, immersive, or game-based learning. ● Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Additional Skills & Preferred Qualifications ● Attention to detail. ● Interest in LGBTQ+ history, digital humanities, virtual reality, critical AI ethics, or learning sciences. ● Experience with 3D modeling for games or interactive environments (e.g., Blender, Unity).
Learning Opportunities Students will gain experience in: ● Qualitative research methods and data management. ● Cultural heritage archival curation for virtual reality. ● Interactive learning design and sociocultural educational theory. ● Critical AI ethics frameworks and academic literature syntheses.
Expected Deliverables ● Curated archive of LGBTQ+ cultural heritage assets for immersive environments. ● Design sketches, wireframes, or concepts for interactive learning. ● Organized qualitative research files and annotated literature database.

Selection Criteria Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate: ● Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. ● Clear interest in sociocultural learning, interactive design, critical technology studies, or LGBTQ+ heritage. ● Familiarity or experience with 3D asset creation and design tools.
Position Details ● Hourly Rate: $15.00/hour ● Total Hours: 100 ● Appointment Period: Fall 2026 – Spring 2027 ● Work Schedule: Coordinated with project milestones and student availability.
